We do it every day. We meet people. Do you remember everyone you met yesterday? What do you remember about them? Did someone have bad breath? Were they constantly picking at their nails? Did they wear too much perfume? Did they stand to close? Was their outfit coordinated and well cared for? People leave an impression with us. We either remember them or not. If we do, the impression is either positive or negative. And interestingly, most people fail to realize that we have only one chance to create a lasting impression with someone.
With business, the significance of that first impression can carry substantial weight. It may determine whether or not we get that referral, that introduction, or even that visibility as a credible expert in your professional field. That missed opportunity is something you’ve passed on to your competitor.
Take the time today to take a good, hard look at yourself. What do you see? Ask others, especially those you know who will tell you the truth. Is the image we have of ourselves lined up with how people see us? Remember, “You only have one chance to make a good first impression.”
What is the “first impression” you leave with those you meet each day?
